The art and science of fact-checking
Fact-checking isn't about trusting or distrusting a source on instinct — it's a repeatable process. A good fact-checker isolates the exact claim being made, traces it back to its origin, weighs the primary evidence, and checks it against what qualified experts actually agree on.
The goal isn't to “win” an argument but to reach an honest verdict: true, false, misleading, or simply unverifiable given the available evidence.
The professional verification framework
Claim identification
Isolate the specific, checkable claim. What exactly is being asserted — and is it a factual claim you can verify, or an opinion?
Source investigation
Trace the claim back to its origin. Who said it first? What's their track record, expertise and possible motive?
Evidence collection
Gather primary sources and data. Prefer original documents, studies and records over second-hand summaries.
Expert consultation
Check with qualified specialists in the relevant field, and against the broader scientific or professional consensus.
Verification verdict
Reach a documented conclusion — true, false, misleading or unverifiable — and show the reasoning that got you there.
Advanced verification techniques
Visual & media verification
Use reverse-image search, check metadata and look for signs of editing to confirm that images and video are really what they claim to be.
Statistical claims
Check where the numbers come from, how the sample was drawn, and whether the statistic actually supports the claim being made with it.
Quote & attribution
Find the original context. Quotes are often trimmed, altered or attributed to the wrong person entirely.
Scientific claims
Look for peer-reviewed studies, replication and the weight of evidence — not a single dramatic paper or press release.
Case study: a viral health claim
“This common spice cures disease”
A social-media post claims that a common kitchen spice “cures” a serious illness, citing “a study” and a dramatic before-and-after story. It's been shared thousands of times.
The claim
“Studies prove this spice cures the disease — doctors don't want you to know!”
What the investigation finds
One small, unreplicated lab study on cells — not people — funded by a seller. No clinical trials, and no support from the medical consensus. Verdict: misleading.
The fact-checker's checklist
- Is the claim specific and actually checkable?
- Can I trace it back to a primary source?
- Does independent evidence support it?
- What do qualified experts in the field say?
- Am I about to share this before I've verified it?
